Puerto Plata Hotels & ResortsAlthough Nicolas de Ovando founded Puerto Plata in 1502, it was Christopher Columbus who first declared it “the fairest land under heaven" in 1492 after landing on the country’s north coast. The sentiment stands true today as the city’s dramatic backdrop of pristine stretches of beach and majestic coastal mountains continues to draws visitors to the popular resort area. Large waves and reef breaks make Puerto Plata an ideal destination for surfers, while divers of all levels can enjoy shallow reefs, shipwrecks and freshwater cave diving. Take a cable car to the top of nearby Mount Isabel de Torres for stunning views of the city and surrounding areas. You will also find botanical gardens and a small replica statue of Christ the Redeemer at the top. Other notable places to visit are the fortress of San Felipe, built in 1541 to defend the city from pirate attacks, and the Brugal Rum Distillery where you can sample the local rum. Puerto Plata's international airport is less than a 20-minute drive from most hotels.
